It is right in the country, and covers a domain of over 800 acres, beautifully planted with trees and shrubs. Over this domain, or campus, as it is called, are scattered a number of buildings, some of them of considerable architectural beauty. It was raining when we arrived, so we were driven in a closed carriage to see some of the buildings. The assembly hall for big functions, which we visited first, is a fine circular building, beautifully decorated with mosaic. The University library is very large and well arranged. A special feature which I noticed in it is that it contains twenty-five rooms furnished for use by professors and advanced students in particular subjects. In each room there is a library of books on the subject for the study of which the room is set aside. The libraries at American Universities are very much more used by the students than those at the English Universities are, as Referring to Mr. Arthur W. Black, Mayor of Nottingham, a member of the Mosely Commission. the students do most of their work in the libraries, and not in their private rooms. The gymnasium and baths at Princeton are even more complete and magnificent than those we saw at Lawrenceville. Athleticism, physical training, and games here are engaged in with the great intensity which is so characteristic of the American people. For one coming from the old country it is almost impossible to realize the extent to which this intense eagerness pervades all American life. Games and sports, for instance, lose all their recreative character; to the boy who takes them up they are a most serious business, requiring most rigid and exacting courses of preparation and training.
